KING — East Surry tennis lost to West Stokes 8-1 Monday.

The Cardinals won a close doubles match, but couldn’t break through for a singles win against a Wildcats team that leads the Western Piedmont Conference.

Top seed Daniel Hancock and second seed Dan Moore pulled out a 9-7 win over David Gravitte and Thomas Kiger.

On Court Two, Devon Goble made his season debut.

The football player wanted to play tennis, but was sidelined by an emergency appendectomy several weeks ago, said Coach Brandon Cook.

After taking some time to recuperate, Devon might not be back to 100 percent yet, but Cook and the Gobles believe he is doing well enough to play doubles, where there is less running since he has a partner.

Goble and Moore fell to Christian Thigpen and Cameron Cresong 8-2.

Ben Ruedisueli and Trevor Lowe lost 8-4 to Zach Miller and Michael Parker.

In singles, Hancock lost to Andrew Holmes 6-0, 6-2. Moore lost 6-1, 6-1 to Sam Elter.

Aaron Sigmon lost 6-0, 6-0 to George Blankenship. Lucas Bonilla lost 6-1, 6-0 to Jacob Covington.

Ruedisueli lost to Ethan Elliott 6-1, 6-0.

John Marion lost to Frank Sells 6-0, 6-1.

The Cards have another nonconference match Wednesday at North Surry.
