Mount Airy swept North Surry 9-0 in a tennis rematch Friday.

The Granite Bears improved to 4-0 against 2A competition, having beaten the Greyhounds twice and Surry Central and West Stokes once.

The Bears’ only loss in a 5-1 start came to Northwest Conference leader Bishop McGuinness.

The Greyhounds didn’t make it easy for the Bears, pushing the rivals in a few singles matches and all three doubles matches.

Top seed Mitch Kessler got the Bears off to a fast start with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Samuel Holder.

On Court Five, North’s Cameron Shore went up 2-1, but Hunt Harrison rallied to take 11 of the final 14 games for a 6-4, 6-1 win.

Will Sparks was the next to finish, defeating North’s Elijah Bryant 6-2, 6-3 to give Mount Airy a 3-0 lead.

On Court Two, the Bears’ Justin Leonard went up 4-1, but Corbin Willard closed to 5-4 before losing 6-4. Leonard took the second set 6-3.

Sixth seed Gentry Williamson’s 6-1, 6-2 win over Mason Taylor clinched the team victory as Court Three saw its match go to a tiebreaker.

Mount Airy’s Jack Marion was up 3-2 when Alex Jones took the next four games for a 6-3 first set.

Marion went up 4-1 in the second set before Jones rallied to 5-4. Marion took the next game to force the tiebreaker where he never trailed and jumped out to a commanding 8-1 lead. Marion won 10-3.

In doubles play, North’s Holder and Willard took the first three games against Kessler and Leonard, but the Bears ripped off seven straight games to go up 7-3 before winning 8-4.

Similarly, Bryant and Taylor gave North a 3-0 lead before Sparks and Harrison rallied to win 8-4.

At the second spot, Marion and Williamson defeated Jones and Shore 8-3.

Mount Airy travels to East Wilkes on Monday, while the Hounds have a Western Piedmont Conference match Tuesday with Surry Central.
