Mount Airy Parks and Recreation has announced this year’s list of inductees into the Greater Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame.

The four players and coaches making up the Class of 2014 are Eddie Cobb, Jim Frye Jr., Edsel Hiatt and Brandon Hiatt. The recipient for the Granite City Award will be Mike Bowman.

Mount Airy Parks and Recreation will induct the new class at 3 p.m. on April 6 in the Andy Griffith Playhouse, with a reception to follow.

Some of Eddie Cobb’s former players wrote in to tell why their coach should be in the Hall of Fame.

Cobb was the first coach of the Lady Bears golf team and averaged eight wins in his three seasons as football coach, but it was his long and successful run as girls basketball coach that earned his induction.

No one had more letters of recommendation this year than Edsel Hiatt, who lettered in football and baseball all four years at Mount Airy.

Not only did he play football in college, Edsel Hiatt went on to have a long career in coaching until retiring in 2009.

Jim Frye played football at Mount Airy and at the University of Richmond before a 36-year career with Phillip Morris.

Frye, who served two years in the Army, also has a long list of community service endeavors in the Richmond area.

Brandon Hiatt left Mount Airy as the career scoring and rebounding leader for the basketball team.

He later earned a Bronze Star for his service in the first Iraq war. The former Eagle scout spent eight years in the Army before returning home to raise a family.

The Granite City Award goes to a person who has made a contribution to sports, but not as a player or coach.

Mike Bowman spent 18 years on the board of directors for Reeves Community Center and 25 years with the Mount Airy Youth Foundation.

As the induction date draws closer, The News will provide a feature on each of these new members.
