The Granite Bears tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 9-0 sweep of East Wilkes.
The Bears won 7-2 on opening day against West Stokes, but two of those matches went to a tiebreaker. Thursday’s match was more one-sided as Mount Airy took every set.
Blake Hensley, who missed Wednesday’s match, started in the sixth spot and earned the first point against the Cardinals. He defeated Stone Bauguess 6-1, 6-2.
Justin Leonard picked up the second win on Court Two with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Matthew Philley.
Top seed Mitch Kessler won the first set 6-3 against Dillon Shewe, then dropped the first game of the second set. He roared back with six straight for a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Jack Marion had a close battle with Landon Osbourne on Court Four, but pulled out each set, 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Will Sparks lost on Wednesday, but bounced back against East Wilkes.
“Trailing early in both sets, Sparks rallied to secure the team victory for the Bears,” said Coach Rodney Pell. Sparks beat Jeffrey Haynes 6-4, 6-2.
Hunt Harrison made it a perfect 6-0 for singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kyle Rhodes.
“Hunt was down 2-3 in the first set and won 10 successive games to complete Mount Airy’s sweep,” said Pell.
In doubles, Kessler and Sam Brown jumped out to a 4-1 lead and finished 8-4 against Shewe/Osbourne.
Leonard and Marion were in a close match at 4-3 before taking four of the next five games for the win over Philley/Haynes.
Sparks and Harrison were down 3-4 before running off five straight games to beat Rhodes and Cole Baugess.
The Bears open Northwest Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to East Surry.
