GRANITE FALLS — A South Caldwell football player with local ties has signed to play for Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C.
Nick Matthews, the son of Tony Matthews, attended White Plains Elementary and Gentry Middle School. He still has several relatives in Surry County.
Tony Matthews said his son stands 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds and runs the 40 in 4.5 seconds.
Nick received all-conference honors on both the offensive and defensive sides at the 4A level.
Tony said Nick’s best position might be defensive back, but Limestone recruited him for his receiving abilities.
Nick was on the field for almost every play as he also punted, kicked and returned punts and kicks. He was named the South Caldwell team MVP.
Nick has been on the varsity team for three years and was a team captain this fall.
Nick and his quarterback, Trevor Soles, were interested in going to college as a team, said Tony.
The two were very interested in Wingate until the coach that was recruiting them left to take a job at Limestone, so they both decided to sign there instead, the dad said.
Nick and Trevor took South Caldwell deep into the playoffs before they lost to Dudley, the eventual state 4A champion.
Dudley had a monster team, but Nick did well in the game, so that helped his stock, said Tony.
