DANBURY — Gabi Jessup scored 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds and Sydney Mosley scored 16 to lead East Surry to a Northwest Conference win over North Stokes 53-44 on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals improved to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the league. East led 17-14 after the first quarter and 30-20 at halftime before building a 19-point lead heading into the fourth.
Coach Keith Gunter of East said Jessup hit some big shots in the third quarter as the Cardinals stretched the lead. East was playing without Cheyenne Kota and Sydney Marion against the Vikings. Gunter said Laken Bowman, Jessi Marion and Kacie Markle took on greater roles.
“Jessi Marion got extended playing time,” he said. “She stepped up, had some big blocks, made some good defensive plays inside on some drives to the basket, and drew some charges.”
Mosley also had six assists and Bowman had four assists. Markle grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her six points.
Hannah McBride paced the Lady Vikings with 17 points. Summer Harris also hit double-figures with 11. North picked up its defensive intensity in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 18-8.
Up next for East is a rematch against Winston-Salem Prep tonight. The Phoenix rolled to an 18-point win in the first meeting between the two teams in Winston-Salem. Prep came into Tuesday night two games out of first place in the league standings behind Bishop McGuinness.
“We’ll enjoy the win, we have Prep (tonight). We know what we’ve got to do. We’ll have to get after it for another 32 minutes, or whatever it takes.”
