KANNAPOLIS — A slow first quarter put the Surry Home Educators’ team in a hole from which they couldn’t climb out Monday night.

The Runnin’ Patriots girls team fell to Cabarrus Home School, 49-33, in their first meeting this season.

“The story of the night was the first quarter,” said Coach Todd Hill. “We just did not show up.”

“We did not press well, we didn’t shoot it well, and we got into foul trouble early,” said Hill.

The cold start allowed the Lady Stallions to jump out to a 22-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Cabarrus’ Grace Potts scored three times in the first two minutes and got players in foul trouble.

The coach said he tried putting Krissa Hill on Potts, and Krissa did a decent job of slowing her down. Potts finished with a game-high 19 points.

There were some mental errors early, and the girls gave up a few rebounds, the coach said. However, for the final three quarters, the Lady Patriots dominated on the glass and actually outscored Cabarrus by two points.

Rebounds are an effort stat, Hill said, so that shows how hard the players continued to work even though they were down.

With the foul trouble, a lot of girls were forced into playing outside their comfort zone, and Hill said he was proud of how they responded.

The 18-point lead was trimmed to 12 by halftime at 29-17. The Stallions edged ahead slight in the third for a 40-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Jessica Boyd led Surry with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Kaylee Parris added 10 points and 13 boards. Kelsey Cave had 12 rebounds, giving Surry three players in double figures.

Sydney Bedsaul scored eight point sand Jill Boyd three.

Jessica Boyd led the defense with five steals.

On Friday, the Lady Patriots travel to Reidsville to play Community Baptist.
