MILLERS CREEK — Surry Central’s Nathon Bautista and North Surry’s Austin Rozier took first place in their weight classes at the C.H. Necessary Invitational on Saturday at West Wilkes High School. The Greyhounds also finished fourth overall at the tournament.

Formerly the Blackhawk Invitational, the tournament was renamed after the first wrestling coach at West Wilkes.

At 113 pounds, Bautista had a first round bye and then picked up a win by first-period pin in the semifinals. In the finals, Bautista, a senior who is the second ranked 1A wrestler in the state at 113, pinned his opponent in 39 seconds to improve his season record to 11-1.

“Nathon looked very impressive,” Central Coach Stephen Priddy said. “He dominated his weight class.”

Central ended up taking six varsity wrestlers to the tournament after several got hit with the flu. Still, the Eagles ended up placing three of the six. Five junior varsity wrestlers competed in the JV tournament.

Uriel Secondino placed third at 145 pounds, earning three wins on the day. Zack Martin was third at 170 pounds, with his only loss coming to the eventual winner from West Davidson. Martin had two wins by major decision and a pin.

Davie County ended up winning the tournament and West Caldwell finished in second place. West Wilkes finished third, just ahead of North Surry.

Also competing were East Surry, McMichael, Salisbury and West Davidson.

Priddy said these types of tournaments help provide a good measuring stick for his team, and show what they need to work on most.

“Everybody that was there today did well,” Priddy said. “Most everyone we had there, if they didn’t place, was one win away from placing.”

The Greyhounds’ Rozier, a junior, won at 126 pounds to improve to 11-0. As the top seed, he also had a first-round bye, and then won his second match against an opponent from McMichael 18-1.

“In the finals it was between him and home crowd favorite Brandon Reynolds, of West Wilkes, also a state qualifier,” North Coach Eric Jessup said. “It was a good match, and Austin got a 4-3 win. I was proud of the way Austin wrestled. He looked good on his feet all day, he wrestled well on bottom and on top.”

Other finishers for North were Devin Green (170, second place), Cody Slate (220, third), Austin Akers (285, third), Cesar Cardoso (106, third), Saige Wolf (113, fourth) and Zacch Gregory (138, fourth). Green, a junior, was winning his finals match 6-4, before getting pinned in the third period. It was only the first loss of the season for Green (11-1).

“Out of the nine teams, there wasn’t a weak team there,” Jessup said. “East Surry was the only 1A team there and they are one of the top 1A teams in the state. I was really pleased with the way our guys wrestled. These early season individual tournaments can be tough, but they battled well against very good competition.”

North is scheduled to go to Ashe County for a tri-match on Tuesday night, and then Forbush for the Austin Macemore Memorial Tournament on Saturday. Central travels to Alleghany on Tuesday for a tri-match against Alleghany and South Stokes, and then goes to Forbush on Saturday.
