KING — No longer short-handed because of football season, East Surry’s wrestling team is filling its lineup and hoping to contend in the Northwest Conference.
East Surry picked up a 45-33 win against West Stokes late Tuesday night in a tri-match at West Stokes High School. The Cardinals also lost to McMichael 54-26.
As of Thursday, East had only held two practices with all of its wrestlers available. Seven were also players on East Surry’s football team that reached the third round of the Class 1AA West playoffs. The Cardinals’ football season ended last Friday in a 48-27 loss to West Montgomery.
Andrew Kozlow (132 pounds), Keanu Love (160), Gage Edwards (170) and Jacob Chattin (220) all played varsity football for the Cards. Other than a bug that has hit a few wrestlers, East coach Darrin Haywood said everyone is fairly healthy, with only a few minor injuries.
“We are trying to fill some holes in our lineup,” Haywood said. “Overall the kids who have wrestled have done really well for us.” We are just trying to build chemistry on our team.”
Returning to East’s lineup are three state qualifiers, including junior Eddie Nunez, a state runner-up last year in the 106-pound weight class. Senior Jimmy Spear and junior Timmy Norman also qualified for the state meet. Those three have posted a combined record of 16-3 so far this year.
In addition to Spear, East has three other seniors on the team — Love, Chattin, and Mitchell Flynt.
“We are hoping the leadership of those four kids really helps us,” Haywood said.
Against West Stokes, Haywood moved everyone up a weight class from 182 pounds up. Haywood said Colton Bruner got a big win for the Cards, with his first-period pin against Matthew Craver at 195. Nunez (120 pounds), Chattin (heavyweight) and Caleb Lowe (160) also recorded pins for the Cards.
Kozlow (132) earned a win by tech. fall and Spear (152) won by major decision in his match. Flynt (182) and Anthony Delaney (113) received wins by forfeit.
Against McMichael, a perennially strong 3A team, Nunez, Spear, and Chattin won by pin for the Cards. Also, Kozlow won by tech. fall and Lowe earned a win by decision.
East will participate in the Blackhawk Invitational at West Wilkes High School this weekend, and then the Cards return home for a tri-match on Tuesday. The Cardinals finished as the top 1A team and was second overall in the 1A/2A conference last year. This season, East is competing in a league with Mount Airy, Bishop McGuinness, North Stokes, Walkertown and Atkins.
“It’s going to be a very competitive league this year,” Haywood said. “Mount Airy looks like the team to beat. Bishop is consistent. Hopefully we’ll be able to compete with them and have a chance to beat them. I’m not familiar with Walkertown and Atkins.”
