PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry advanced to the second round of the state 1A playoffs with a 7-2 victory over Roxboro Community Wednesday.

The Cardinals led 5-2 at the break and never gave Roxboro a look at the goal the entire second half. Keeper Marco Gomez wasn’t challenged once in that 40 minutes.

East Surry (13-5-3) advances to the second round against Union Academy, which defeated North Stanly 4-0.

“We came out strong,” said Coach Bill Hart. Brody Gentry scored in the first minute.

“I thought our offense did well in getting opportunities,” said Hart.

The game play was to get the ball into the keeper’s box and fight for it, he said. The sideline throw-ins, corner kicks and passes from the outside were all designed to get in tight and convert.

“Everybody contributed,” he said, “and we’re looking forward to playing our next opponent.”

In the first half, Caleb Lowe scored off a penalty kick, Gentry scored a second time and Ben Martin converted, said Hall.

In the second half, Brayan Gomez scored twice, one off a pass from the right boundary by Cole Casstevens.

Union Academy is in Monroe, so the team has a long bus ride Saturday.

The match likely will start at 6 p.m. because the team cannot get an early start because of players taking the SAT that morning.
