WALKERTOWN — Mount Airy roared back from a big halftime deficit to beat Walkertown 48-40 on the road.

“It was a great team effort,” said Coach Kelly Holder. “They had us down.”

At halftime, Holder said he told the boys that this game could be a loss or it could be the greatest win they ever have.

The Bears came out in the second half and just played better, he said. The kids came up with some big plays, including a key interception and two two-point conversions, he noted.

The Bears scored to cut the Wolfpack lead to 33-31. On the two-point try, quarterback Logan Holder faked a handoff then found Julian Rawley for a pass in the end zone.

Walkertown scored to take the lead 40-33, but the Bears answered with a touchdown to cut the margin to 40-39.

Coach Holder again went for two points. This time fullback Andrew Jones bowled through the line for the score to take a 41-40 lead.

Walkertown couldn’t answer and gave the ball back to the Bears.

Mount Airy added an insurance score for an eight-point win.

After losing their first two games, the Bears have gone 6-1, with a 3-0 record in the Northwest Conference.

Walkertown falls to 7-2, but both losses have come in league play for a 1-2 mark.

The Bears will have Senior Night Friday against North Stokes.
