Local volleyball and tennis teams are back in action today for the second rounds of state playoffs.

North Surry volleyball and Mount Airy tennis are reigning state champions and looking to return to the finals in their sports.

The Lady Bears (16-2) host East Wilkes (15-4) at 4 p.m. today.

The winner of that match likely will face East Montgomery in the second round. The Bears had a chance to see some of those players at the 1A regional tournament Friday and Monday.

Surry Central (14-1) was facing a trip to Mount Pleasant, but Bandys upset the higher seed last week. So, the Lady Eagles will host Bandys this afternoon.

Looming in the next round is a potential battle with Lake Norman Charter (16-1). The winner of that match would likely face reigning champion Salisbury in the West Regional final.

Also still alive is Bishop McGuinness, which faces the Community School of Davidson today. The winner of that match likely will take on Gray Stone Day in the next round.

Six local players also have qualified for the state individual tournament this weekend at the Cary Tennis Center.

The 1A tournament is an eight-entrant bracket, while the 2A has 16 entries.

With a win in the regional tournament, Mount Airy’s Davi Barbour and Haley Thomas are the top seed for the West and take on the fourth seed for the East.

Teammates Bree Hughes and Carley VanHoy are the fourth seed for the West and play the top seed for the East.

North Surry’s Sarah Glasco is the third seed for the Midwest and will play the second seed from the Mideast.

Surry Central’s Marlee Wilmoth is the fourth seed for the Midwest and takes on the top seed from the Mideast.

Volleyball

The Lady Greyhounds (25-3) host West Stanly (15-7) at 4 p.m. The Hounds are riding a 24-match winning streak.

The Hounds next would face the winner of West Wilkes and Lake Norman Charter.

Elsewhere in 2A, North Wilkes hosts Forbush, and West Stokes goes to West Davidson. The winners of those two matches will face off in the next round.

East Surry travels to Starmount in 1A play. While both teams are 22-6, the Lady Rams are a top seed for the Mountain Valley Conference, and the Lady Cardinals are the second-place team behind North Stokes from the Northwest.

That gives the Rams home court in a gym that really packs in a crowd.

East Wilkes travels to Albemarle with the winner getting the winner of East Surry and Starmount.

North Stokes, meanwhile, is hosting Alleghany. Bishop goes to West Montgomery. The winners of those matches face each other next.

These eight teams are in the same half of the bracket, so one of them will advance to the 1A West Regional semifinals.
