DOBSON — Surry Central defeated South Stokes 24-6 in Friday’s homecoming game for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles held the Sauras scoreless until Saura Jaquan Martin broke loose in the fourth and scored with 3:28 left to go.

Shortly after the kicking off to the visitors, the Golden Eagles took possession of the ball after Golden Eagle Reid Stanley intercepted a South Stokes pass. Quarterback Alex Martin went to work out of a shotgun. Martin got several carries to Raymond Salazar and Kenyon Martin broke loose for a big run on third down to convert the play and set up a touchdown run by Martin. Jose Avalos was good for the extra point and made the score Golden Eagles 7-0.

Saura Keegan Ross did record a sack in those first set of downs, but the momentum remained all Golden Eagles.

Also in the first, short and long ground yards were contributed by Chris Craddock, Kenyon Martin and Stanley.

Just after the quarter ended, Alex Martin got a 40-yard run up field and the Golden Eagles offensive crew started banging out positive yardage on the ground.

Kenyon Martin scored to make the score Golden Eagles 14-0. With more yardage by Craddock and crew up field in the second, Salazar put a third touchdown on the board. The kick as good by Avalos. The Eagles led at half-time 21-o.

In the third, Avalos nailed a 32-yard field goal to make the score 24-0.

Head Coach Monty Southern said defensive end Nick Coe “early on made a lot of tackles for a loss, when we had him in tight end, he did a good job of blocking on the edge.”

“The special teams did great all around,” said Southern. Avalos was perfect in the PAT category and 1/1 in field goals.

Also on special teams, Kenyon Martin got the block on a Sauras’ field goal attempt. “Martin found the take off and got in on the crease, to make the play,” said Southern.

“The whole team came out with great intensity,” said Southern. He credited both the offensive and defensive line.

About the quarterback, he said, “Alex is a gritty kid. He had success running and throwing.”

The whole offensive line, Alex Murphy, Tyler White, Zach Martin, Kaleb Dunn, Jason Barnes, and Austin Peale did their job, said Southern.

Nick Coe, Jason Barnes, David Pena, Alex Murphy held on defense, said the coach.

Every week, Stephen Bruner is always getting up off piles, win or lose he is one our best leaders, the coach said. He has got a nose for the ball and always there, said Southern.

Golden Eagles and Sauras teams were on the hunt for the win both having 0-1 conference records in the 2A Western Piedmont Athletic Conference.

The win moved the Golden Eagles to .500 with a 4-4 overall record.

Surry Central plays North Surry away next Friday.
