The Lady Bears swept Elkin 6-0 to advance to the second round of the dual-team tennis playoffs.

Next Tuesday at 4 p.m., Mount Airy (15-2) will host East Wilkes (15-4), which got a first-round bye as the top seed from the Mountain Valley Conference.

By taking all six singles matches, the Bears clinched the team win without the need for doubles.

“I was really happy with everybody’s play,” said Coach Scott Kniskern. “We’ve been trying to nurse some sore ankles, and people getting sick. We’ve been trying to get them well, so it was nice to get an early night.”

Top seed Davi Barbour beat Payton Nicholson 6-1, 6-1.

Second seed Haley Thomas won over Miracle Walters 6-1, 6-1.

Third seed Bree Hughes topped Makayla Dimmette 6-2, 6-1.

Fourth seed Jai Daniels bested Ally Gentry 6-0, 6-1.

Fifth seed Carley VanHoy beat Julie Newmark 6-3, 6-3.

Sixth seed Bailey Jackson beat Emma Aldridge 6-2, 6-1.

The Bears, ranked first in the state for 1A, now will have a couple of days of practice before going to Elkin for the 1A regional tournament Friday and Saturday.

Five of the six starters will be in the tournament. Daniels will play singles, while the other four compete in doubles: Barbour/Thomas and Hughes/VanHoy.

Kniskern is the regional director for the tournament, which begins Friday at 2 p.m. and then Saturday at 9 a.m.

Following next Tuesday’s action, the winner of Mount Airy and East Wilkes (ranked seventh) will face the winner of East Montgomery (ranked fourth) and Thomas Jefferson.

Bishop McGuinness (ranked third) beat North Stokes (ranked eighth) 5-1 and advances to face the Community School of Davidson (ranked sixth). The winner of that match likely will face Gray Stone Day, ranked second.

As has been the case the past few years, the majority of ranked teams come from the western half of the state. The east’s top teams are Franklin Academy, ranked fifth, and Raleigh Charter, ranked ninth.
