Lady Hounds hosting 2A tennis tournament
by Jeff Linville Staff Reporter
North Surry is hosting the first-ever conference tennis tournament for the Western Piedmont today.
Five of the six teams are participating in the two-day event, with Carver abstaining since it didn’t field a full team this year.
In recent years, the Northwest 2A Tournament only had three teams, so the entire event could be played in one day. However, with 10 singles players and 10 doubles teams, there will be play-in matches in both brackets before the quarterfinals begin.
Because of the need for play-ins, the tournament will start earlier this year. Rather than 4 p.m., the tournament kicks off at 1 p.m.
The coaches and league wanted to get an early start to be sure that at least the play-ins and quarterfinal round take place today, said North Coach Maggie McKee. With a threat of rain on Wednesday, the players might even squeeze in a semifinal round, but the coaches will play that by ear.
Whatever matches are left will take place on Wednesday.
North Surry’s Sarah Glasco is the top seed for the event, with Surry Central’s Marlee Wilmoth at the second spot.
Rather than rank the third and fourth seeds, the coaches try to split up schools into both sides so that teammates aren’t playing each other early on.
Glasco will await the winner of Anna Brown (West Stokes) and Carmen Wilkins (Forbush).
Wilmoth faces the winner of Bailey Atkins (North Surry) and Makayla Matthews (Forbush).
On Glasco’s side of the bracket, Central’s Sommer Chilton takes on Taylor Evans (South Stokes).
On Wilmoth’s half of the bracket, Abbey Emerson (West Stokes) plays Julie Linville (South Stokes).
For doubles, Central’s Kennedy Dockery and Mikayla Cox are the top seeds, while Alisha Baity and Makayla Pendergraft (Forbush) are the second seeds.
Dockery/Cox play the winner of Kristen Denny and Nora Skinner (South Stokes) versus Savannah Yale and Brandi Sheek (Forbush).
Baity/Pendergraft await the victor of North’s Abby Lawson and Taylor Tickle versus Lauren Palmer and Catherine Nachand (West Stokes).
On the Dockery/Cox side of the bracket, North’s Rebecca Parsons and Hannah Southern face West Stokes’ Erin Kye and Abbey Westmoreland.
On the other side, Central’s Mallory Wilmoth and Olivia Fowler face Jenny Glidewell and Kaitlyn Denny (South Stokes).
