Lady Knights edge out conference win

DOBSON — The Surry Community College Lady Knights claimed a conference victory over Guilford Tech by a score of 3-1 in Region X volleyball on Tuesday.
The Lady Knights jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set, then holding on to take the win 25-23.
Brooke Johnson led Surry with five kills in the first set with Samantha Dimmette adding three.
Dana Brown dished out seven assists in the frame while also adding a service ace. Defensively, Johnson recorded three blocks and Maddison Hawks notched eight digs.
Guilford Tech retaliated and overcame the Lady Knights in the second set 25-18. In set two, Johnson totaled three kills, with Brown recording six assists. Hawks led the Surry defense with seven digs in the set.
“The second set against Guilford Tech was a very uninspired performance,” stated Surry Coach Jan Marion Kiser. “If we are going to compete in our region, we must get a better effort.”
The Lady Knights rebounded with a strong third set, winning 25 -20, to take a 2-1 lead over the Titans.
Johnson recorded another three kills and Brown dished out eight assists. Brown also recorded nine digs in the set. Shay Hampton improved the defensive effort with two blocks.
Surry was able to close out the contest 3-1 by taking the fourth set, 25-19.
Once again, Johnson led the Surry offense with four kills, while Brown dished out seven assists. Hawks and Madison
Jessup each recorded three digs in the final set with Johnson adding two blocks.
“We played much better in the third and fourth sets,” added Marion-Kiser.
Overall, the Lady Knights were led by Johnson’s 15 kills while Dimmette recorded seven.
Brown dished out a game high 28 assists to go along with three service aces. On the defensive side, Hawks led Surry with 23 digs while Alexis Allen added 16 digs. Johnson led Surry in blocks with eight, while Cassidy Gregory added five.
Surry, is 9-4 overall and 4-3 in the Region X conference.
The Region X (Division 11) conference is composed of Brunswick Community College, Cape Fear Community College, Catawba Valley Community College, Guilford Tech Community College, Johnston Community College, Lenoir Community College, Louisburg Community College, Pitt Community College, Surry Community College and Wilkes Community College.
The Lady Knights travel to Rockingham Community College today for a 6 p.m. contest with the Lady Eagles. Next, The Lady Knights then travel to Brunswick Community College for a tri-match on Saturday with the Lady Dolphins of Brunswick and Cape Fear. The first match starts at 11 a.m.
