PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry Cardinals boys took a hefty win over Walkertown in their first conference match and will meet Bishop McGuinness Thursday in their second.
The Cards won 9-0 against Walkertown and their record moved to 6-5-1.
Nine different scorers registered a goal in the victory. All five seniors on the team recorded one.
Seniors Ethan Atkins and Caleb Mann each scored a goal in the first half. Also, John Marion, Jimmy Speer and Marco Gomez scored one apiece in the second half.
The Walkertown soccer program started this season and Cardinal Head Coach Bill Hart said they played with intensity the entire game.
Hart said the Cardinal passing was “good at times,” and the “defense was solid throughout.”
Other scorers for the Cards were Brayan Gomez, Dylan Wagoner, Antonio Mata, and Brody Gentry.
In the upcoming home game on Thursday against Bishop, the team will devote the game to epilepsy awareness. It is an effort to help teammate John Marion with his senior project on epilepsy. Attendees are encouraged to wear purple, the color designated for epilepsy.
