PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry blanked West Stokes 9-0 in tennis Wednesday.

The Lady Cardinals dominated the match with not a single set in serious jeopardy.

Sixth seed Sarah Gibson fell behind 2-3 in the first set. She admitted to feeling sluggish as she battles a head cold and the effects of her cold medicine.

Still, she tightened up on Anna Brown and won 10 of 11 games for a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Then in doubles play, she teamed up with fellow freshman Mikayla Manuel for an 8-0 win over Brown and Catherine Nachand.

Coach David Kidd said he has been impressed with the way that Gibson and Manuel have gelled in the past two weeks since Gibson cracked the starting lineup.

They have only played four doubles matches together, but in that time they have gone 32-2. After an 8-2 win in their first match, they have won 8-0 in the past three matches.

As for the team overall, Kidd said he was very proud of the way the girls bounced back from a rough loss last week. Against conference leader Bishop McGuinness, the Cards couldn’t break through for a single win.

In the two matches this week, however, the Cards (6-3) have gone 17-1 against South Stokes and West Stokes.

East Surry will get a chance to move its 2-2 conference record into the plus side when the team goes to Winston-Salem Prep today.

In singles Wednesday, top seed Tiffany King won 6-1, 6-2 over Abbey Emerson.

Second seed Haley Manuel beat Abbey Westmoreland 6-1, 6-1. Third seed Brooke Tickle won 6-3, 6-1 over Erin Kye.

Fourth seed Allie Hawks beat Lauren Palmer 6-0, 6-1.

Fifth seed Mikayla Manuel swept Nachand 6-0, 6-0. With her 8-0 doubles win, the freshman was a perfect 20-0 on the day.

In the other doubles matches, King and Haley Manuel won 8-2 over Emerson/Kye. Tickle and Hawks won 8-3 over Westmoreland/Palmer.

After Prep today, the Cards travel to North Surry on Monday.
