DOBSON — The Golden Eagles Dream Team beat the current Surry Central soccer team 5-0 in the second-annual Adan Huerta Alumni Game.
Huerta was an all-conference player all four years at Central, according to Coach Blake Roth. He graduated in 2004 and later moved back to Mexico, where he died in a car accident.
The Eagles had a big number of players return to Dobson for the game, including several all-conference players and key members of teams that have won five conference titles and made four Final Fours in the 2A state playoffs.
“It was great to see all those guys,” Roth said after the game. This is the 14th year that Central has fielded a soccer team.
Keeper Artemio Cortez had a busy night with the alumni keeping the pressure on, said Roth. Cortez made a few phenomenal saves, but it is hard to stop a team with that many weapons, he said.
After the game, Roth told his current players that if they want to win a lot of games and go deep in the playoffs, then it takes bringing it night in and night out like those alumni did in their playing days.
Going against such a talented squad should benefit the Eagles in the long run, he believed. It shows the boys where this team could go and what past teams have been about all these years, he added.
Donnis Barrios scored three goals for the alumni. Luis Garin and Mike Richardson scored once each.
The alumni didn’t have a keeper, so Central’s backup goalie took the spot. Roth said Tanner Whitt put in a great showing, making some good saves. It is nice to know that there is a quality backup waiting in the wings if Cortez can’t go, he said.
Central hosts East Surry on Wednesday, with the JV game starting at 5:15 p.m.
