Cards beat Elkin 3-1 in dedicated game

ELKIN — East Surry’s soccer team defeated Elkin 3-1 on the road Thursday.
Brayan Gomes scored two goals, and Brody Gentry one.
This was the first match since a car accident injured two members of the Cards’ soccer family, noted assistant coach Andrew Jones.
Player Jacob Pettitt was badly injured, and Darragh Boutis, the mother of Souli Boutis, also was hurt in the accident.
The Cardinals dedicated this game to those two, making the win even sweeter.
Souli Boutis had a hand in one goal, feeding Gomes for his second score. Gentry kicked home a point off an assist from Jimmy Speer.
Jones said the Cards played well on defense and didn’t give the Elks many looks at the goal.
Marco Gomez allowed just one goal, but that came off a redirect and couldn’t be helped, according to the assistant.
East Surry travels to South Stokes on Monday and to Forbush on Tuesday before a rivalry game with Surry Central on Thursday.
