PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry outshot Mount Airy and Alleghany in a 1A golf match Wednesday.
Playing at Pilot Knob Park, the Lady Cardinals were 18 strokes better than either the Lady Trojans or Lady Bears.
“It was another good effort by the girls,” said Coach Chad Freeman. “I was proud of them for improving their scores, both individually and as a team.”
Freeman said he was especially proud of Madison Moore for shooting a 38.
“I’ve been waiting for her to break out with a score in the 30s,” he said.
Moore was near the top of the conference in scoring the past two seasons and has shot in the 30s before, but this is her best round of the fall.
She played much better than she did a week ago, yet she still managed a 44 that time, he said.
Madison has a chance to place high in the 1A state tournament, but to do that, she needs to consistently post rounds in the 30s, Freeman said.
It was a perfect day to play, he noted. The temperature was in the low 80s and it wasn’t too humid.
All four Cardinals finished in the top seven.
After Moore’s 38, Alleghany’s Katie Tally was second at 52 and Mount Airy’s Haley Hagwood was tied for third at 54.
Hagwood is just a freshman, said Bear Coach Tommye Phillips. She is the younger sister of tennis player Abby Hagwood.
Mount Airy’s Rachel Ray was tied for eighth at 59, and Abby Brady shot a 63.
Brady is a beginner, and this was her first round of golf, explained Phillips.
“We didn’t play as well as wanted to, but we are getting better,” she said.
Phillips pointed out that senior captain Lauren Hodges was unable to join the team Wednesday.
