WILKES CO —In the second week of the high school football season, the Surry Central varsity football team went on the road to East Wilkes and brought home a 28-21 victory.

In the early minutes of the game, Central’s Kenyon Martin opened with a good run to the inside. The Golden Eagles offensive line dominated at the line of scrimmage and Raymond Salazar pushed straight up the middle for the game’s first touchdown.

Several downs later, Central’s quarterback Alex Martin ran a quarterback draw up the middle to score.

Kicker Uriel Secundino was good on both extra points.

The first quarter ended with the Golden Eagles on top 14-0 and a good run game setting the tone.

In the opening of the second quarter, East Wilkes capitalized on fumble by Central. In the next play, East Wilkes converted a 60-yard run into a touchdown to make the score 14-7 Golden Eagles.

Three good Golden Eagle defensive stops just before the half against East Wilkes left the score 14-7 before halftime.

After halftime, the Golden Eagles took the lead 21-7 and looked to be in control, said Head Coach Monty Southern.

He said East Wilkes was able to cut the lead to 21-14.

Southern said the Golden Eagles responded by grinding it out. “We were tired but we’ve got the bend don’t break mentality,” said Southern.

Quarterback Martin had another 25 yard touchdown and made the score Golden Eagles 28-14.

Southern said East Wilkes got it back and scored with 1:50 left. The touchdown put East Wilkes within one possession making the score Golden Eagles 28-21.

East Wilkes executed an onside kick and recovered it on their own 35 with 1:40 to go.

Southern said in the last stand, the defense stood up to stop East Wilkes.

The game ended Golden Eagles 28-21.

Southern said it was a consistent win and good team effort on all sides of the ball.

The Golden Eagles are now 1-1 and are scheduled to play Wilkes Central on Sept. 6.
