Cards kick for victory in home opener

PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry boys varsity soccer team set the tone early with a hard press against North Surry for a 5-1 win in the opening game for both teams.
Soulis Boutis led the Cardinals on home turf with three goals, Antonio Mata recorded one, and Andrew Zachman, one. Cole Casstevens assisted Mata in the Cards opening drive by trapping the ball with his chest. All goals in the game were recorded in the first half.
Caleb Ramey scored the only goal for the Hounds.
Cards Head Coach Bill Hart called the opening goal by Mata and assist by Casstevens, “A beautiful display.” He then added, “all goals are beautiful.”
Either shoot the ball or pass the ball, Hart yelled from the Cardinal sidelines during most of the game.
Hart got results in what he called a good solid team effort in the first half.
Hart said the Cards focused mostly on possession in the second half but would have liked to see more shots taken on the goal. The Cards were held scoreless in the second half and Hart commended the Greyhounds performance.
The Cardinals are scheduled to play Starmount away on Wednesday.
North Surry Greyhounds Head Varsity boys Coach Rachel Escobar said part of the lackluster Hound outcome of the first half was due to the youth of the team, with half the squad made up of freshman. She said East Surry took advantage of the Hounds desire to get upfield by shooting long passes with good defense.
During the second half, Escobar agreed the Greyhounds came out aggressive and defended well.
Escobar said in the next match against East Wilkes at home on Thursday, she will expect better communication and smarter playing.
She commended the solid play and versatility of Caleb Ramey and his ability to dribble the ball through midfield. She said goal keeper Angel Luna defended well in the second half.
The Greyhound team will continue to build on good passing and shooting by Alfredo Vazquez and Victor Casas and will become better as they get more experience, said Escobar. They will focus also on becoming more efficient in areas such as corner kicks, she said.
