DOBSON — Three recent graduates will attend Surry Community College this fall with the help of a scholarship from a local business women’s group.

The Granite City Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association makes a scholarship available to one senior from each of the four local high schools.

“This year’s recipients of a $1,000 scholarship to Surry Community College are Samantha Wallace from Surry Central, Maggie Smith from East Surry, and Jacqueline Cortes from Mount Airy,” said Debbie Blinkhorn of the ABWA.

Part of the monies for the scholarship fund come from charity events like the ABWA’s annual golf tournament at Pine Ridge Golf Course earlier this summer.

“The tournament format was captain’s choice, and prizes were awarded for the first- and second-place teams,” said Blinkhorn. “Additional prizes were given for the longest drive on hole number 10 and closest to the pin on holes 3, 5, 12 and 16.”

Taking first place in the tourney was the team of Robert Blinkhorn, Bailey Bouma, Phil Lewis and Jarrett Simmons, sponsored by the Debbie Blinkhorn State Farm Agency.

Second place went to the two-man team of Ross Guiles and Mount Airy tennis coach Scott Kniskern.

Bouma won the longest drive competition and was one of the winners of the closest to the pin.

The next ABWA event is a fashion show Aug. 24.
