DOBSON — Surry Community College is offering Violin-Making I/Luthier starting in the fall at the Center for Public Safety, 1220 State St., Mount Airy.
Two class sessions will be offered on Wednesdays, Sept. 10 through Dec. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Award-winning craftsman Joe Thrift is the instructor for the class.
This class is offered to the student willing to commit one year of work toward making a violin from scratch. All skill levels are welcome. Each student will select wood from a tonewood dealer, make templates, sharpen and grind tools, carve, bend, shape and inlay their own instrument. Tools provided. Extra fees are paid by the student for the materials. The cost of the class is $299.
