Looking for free health care?
If so, then you’ll want to attend the Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care health fair on Friday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. -11 a.m. There will be several vendors from the Surry and Stokes counties area, including Gentiva, ComeforCare, Northern Hospital, HomeInstead, Senior Centers of Surry, Golden Living Centers, Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes, and Liberty Home Care.
The health fair will not only provide free health screenings such as blood pressure checks, oxygen saturation tests, blood sugar checks, but refreshments and door prizes as well. This is the second year for this event at the Plot Mountain area office, and sponsors are hoping for they considered another great turn out like last year, when approximately 45-50 area seniors came out to participate.
Sheila Jones, the director for marketing and development for this event, said that with a fair this size they are able provide the area seniors more one on one attention and engage them on a personal level, thus increasing the detailed information about their health and well being.
This health fair also holds a personal appeal to Jones, who a couple of years ago attended a similar health fair with her mother. That day her mother’s cholesterol was checked and determined to be high. Jone’s mother had a follow up appointment and was determined to need bypass surgery. Jones credits the health fair with possibly saving her mother’s life.
“Some people never go to the doctor, and so this may provide them the only opportunity to discover a health problem.” said Jones.
Mountian Valley Hospice & Pallative Care’s goal is to make this health fair an annual event, and with the community’s continued support they hope to make that happen. The Health Fair will be held at the Mountain Valley Hospice Pilot Mountain Office located on 129 Veterans Drive. For further information please call 336-368-1260.
