An alleged sexual assault of a patient at Northern Hospital of Surry County is under investigation by the Mount Airy Police Department.
The case arose in late June, involving a male patient described as being in his early to mid-30s. That individual allegedly was assaulted sexually by a person listed in police department documents as “a care taker” at the hospital.
Those documents state that the NHSC employee, also male, was put on administrative leave from the facility, “and as far as we know is still on leave,” Chief Dale Watson said Wednesday.
No charges have been filed so far in the matter that is still under investigation, Watson said. “One of our investigators has been assigned to the case,” he added.
“Right now, we’re lining up to do some polygraphs, hopefully,” Watson said of efforts to determine whether any charges do result.
“We’ve talked with the suspect and have talked with the victim — we want to make sure we do a thorough investigation.”
The alleged victim made the assault report, which initially was taken by patrol personnel with the police department and subsequently turned over to the detective unit.
There was no word Wednesday on when the inquiry might be concluded.
