Mount Airy Board of Education At Large seat incumbent Tim Matthews has thrown his hat in the ring by filing Wednesday to run for re-election. He has served for 18 years on the board.
“For me, it’s an enjoyable thing to do,” said Matthews as he explained his continued interest in the post. “There are lots of projects going on all the time and I get a lot of enjoyment from being involved with the planning which is so important for children and the betterment of the community.”
Matthews said educational improvement overall is not a quick process with things set in motion today not coming to fruition until later. He said this highlights the need to make planning deliberate and intentional, especially in light of anapparent trend of less education funding.
Matthews said if he is elected again he plans on continuing his support of the goals of the system’s strategic plan and that he has no personal goals in this regard.
“I want to do all I can to continue to make our school system the best in the state. We have a lot of exciting things in the making and that will be introduced next year. Our curriculum is getting more and more aligned with getting us there. Better opportunities for the kids is the big piece of this. Really the strength of a school system lies in the curriculum and raising the achievement levels of the students.”
Matthews said he also really enjoys interaction with other board members and said there are a variety of differing opinions currently on the board but the members conduct themselves with respect for each other, encouraging collaboration.
