Debra Sensel Burkhart, 58, of 668 Orchard View Drive in Mount Airy, was arrested by the Surry County Sheriff’s Department after allegedly attempting to smuggle ten Xanax into the county’s detention center to Jeffrey Dwayne Dawson, 23, of the same address.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson said a detention officer checking items intended for delivery to an inmate found the prescription drug hidden in a pair of socks.
Dawson was jailed pending prosecution on drug charges.
A search warrant served at Burkhart’s residence found more evidence linking her to the pills Atkinson said, but he did not elaborate on what that evidence might be.
Burkhart is charged with providing drugs to an inmate, conspiring to deliver a Schedule IV controlled substance, and possession with intent to sell and deliver a Schedule IV controlled substance.
Dawson is also charged in the conspiracy and is charged with attempted possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance in a confinement facility.
Burkhart’s bond was set at $25,000 and Dawson’s bond was set at $10,000.
