Two people are behind bars in the Surry County Jail under a six-digit bond, held on a slew of charges, and one of the pair say they considered themselves to be the West Virginia “Bonnie and Clyde,” Sheriff Graham Atkinson said.

The arrests come following an investigation that stemmed from a vehicle pursuit initiated by the North Carolina Highway Patrol on Jan. 1, according to the sheriff.’

“At 10:30 p.m., a (member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol) attempted to stop a blue Ford F-150 pickup bearing West Virginia tags,” Atkinson said. “The trooper first observed the vehicle traveling north on business Hwy. 601 near the intersection of Rockford Rd. As the trooper attempted a routine traffic stop the vehicle fled north through the town of Dobson and wrecked near the 3800 block of business 601.”

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Susan Carol Burnette, 35, of Beckley, W.Va., according to the sheriff. Burnette was later transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to be treated for injuries sustained in the accident.

Inside the vehicle, highway patrol officers located an active one pot methamphetamine lab and immediately contacted the sheriff’s department narcotics investigators and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation’s methamphetamine response team.

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen in West Virginia, Atkinson said. Two stolen firearms were also discovered.

“One of the firearms, a .357 caliber handgun, was stolen during a breaking and entering that occurred in Stokes County,” he added. “The other, a .380 caliber handgun, was stolen in Mount Airy.”

In addition, officers located a variety of other items they suspect could be stolen, including credit cards, cell phones, jewelry, computer equipment and purses, the sheriff said.

“As officers continued the investigation, the Surry County sheriff’s office received a report of a GMC pickup being stolen from Cody Trail near Dobson,” Atkinson said, noting the owner also reported that a .243 rifle and ammunition was inside the truck when it was taken.

On Feb. 1, Atkinson said deputies located the truck near a residence on Lower Park Lane.

“As officers began to investigate the stolen truck, they learned that a second suspect in the January chase was located inside the residence at Lower Park Lane,” Atkinson said.

The suspect, Jeffery Scott McCoy, 34, of Crab Orchard, W.Va., was arrested on outstanding warrants from West Virginia.

“During the investigation on Lower Park Lane, officers developed information that McCoy was operating a one-pot methamphetamine lab near the residence,” Atkinson said.

Officers located the lab and called the state bureau of investigation methamphetamine response team.

McCoy was transported to the Surry County Jail, where he is being held on a $225,000 bond.

Burnette was arrested Friday upon her release from the hospital, and is being held in the Surry County Jail under a $250,000 bond.

McCoy, who told officers that he and Burnette considered themselves to be the West Virginia “Bonnie and Clyde,” has been charged with being a fugitive from justice, manufacturing methamphetamine, the possession of precursor materials for methamphetamine manufacture, maintaining a drug vehicle, trafficking in methamphetamine and the possession of drug paraphernalia.

Burnette has been charged with the manufacture of methamphetamine, the possession of precursor materials, maintaining a drug vehicle, two counts of the possession of a stolen firearm, trafficking in methamphetamine, the possession of stolen vehicles and numerous traffic violations.

Atkinson said the investigation is continuing in both Surry County and West Virginia, and additional charges are pending.
