DOBSON — Surry Community College is sponsoring a health fair on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the gymnasium, P Building, on the campus in Dobson.

Anne Marie Hardy, SCC’s coordinator of Health, Wellness and Development, is organizing the fair, which has been held at SCC for three years. Todd Sutton, SCC Student Government Association past president and disabled veteran, started the SCC Health Fair.

Sutton said he wanted to be able to provide resources or information for student veterans and other students as well, who might not know where to go for health services or how to access the services.

“The goal of the health fair is to give students, staff and the community access to information and resources to help them live a healthier lifestyle. There will be some hands-on practical assistance, information about health issues/concerns, and information about health-related agencies in our areas,” Hardy said. “We have added many new features this year, including various holistic topics such as acupuncture and massage therapy.”

The Surry County Sheriff’s Office will be offering a DUI/texting simulation course on the tennis courts near the gymnasium.

“We are particularly excited about having this innovative, hands-on exercise,” Hardy said.

Representatives will be on hand from: Delp Chiropractic, Lincare, Surry County Health Department, Surry County Sheriff’s Department, Surry County Emergency Services, Blue Ridge CareNet Counseling, New Hope Pregnancy Care of Yadkinville, LifeLine Pregnancy of Elkin, Legacy Center of Mount Airy, Dr. Diane Milhan of Mount Airy Community Acupuncture, Susan G. Komen Northwest NC, Easter Seals United Cerebral Palsy, American Red Cross, Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care, March of Dimes, Births Your Way, Integrative Life Solutions and Massage28621 with Robert Thrift.

Surry Community College’s healthcare programs slated to be represented are Physical Therapy Assistance, Medical Assisting and Certified Nursing Assistants. The SCC Cosmetology Department will be providing hand massages. The SCC Physical Education Department will be performing Body Mass Index calculations and body fat percentage calculations. The SCC Paralegal Club will be distributing information about living wills.

John Fennell of the Veteran Affairs Regional Office Outreach in Winston-Salem and Mike Scott, Veteran Services Office Director at the Surry County Human Services Center, will also be available for questions. Persons wanting more information may contact Anne Marie Hardy at (336) 386-3247 or hardya@surry.edu.
