Two alumni of Surry Central High School have chosen to honor the love they share by helping students’ love of learning through the Surry County Schools Educational Foundation.

According to Foundation Liaison Melissa White, Nate Nixon was honored at halftime during the Surry Central-North Surry boys varsity basketball game and chose to make a contribution of $1,000 in honor of his wife, Janice, on the 52nd anniversary of their first date.

White said the Nixons’ first date was at a North Surry-Surry Central game and Nate Nixon thought it would be a fitting way to honor their marriage. The Nixon’s grandson, McKinnley, made a presentation of a dozen red roses to his grandmother at mid-court before the check presentation ceremony to Foundation President Brent McKinney.

McKinnley is a student at Cedar Ridge Elementary Schools and the couple’s daughter-in-law, Sarah, is a third-grade teacher at Cedar Ridge Elementary.

The story read to the halftime audience recalled how Nate Nixon felt Janice “is the prettiest girl he every met and still thinks so to this day.”

The connections didn’t stop there. The couple’s granddaughter, Hannah Nixon, is a student at North Surry High and Janice’s son, Josh, is an emcee and sports announcer at North Surry and was in the booth for the special evening.

“We were thrilled they are willing to honor the special anniversary by a memorial donation which will make a difference in the future of Surry County students,” said White.

The establishment of the Surry County Schools Educational Foundation began in January 2011. White said the foundation was created by a group of local business leaders who are passionate about education and the future of Surry County. Board members believe investing in children’s education will impact the future of Surry County’s economy.

She said she foundation will increase the level of education in our county by helping students pursue higher education and rewarding teachers with professional learning opportunities and extraordinary classroom projects. Persons may obtain more information by calling White at 336-386-8211.
