Spreading the Word through racing

The public is invited to an event designed for one thing and one thing only: To spread the Word.
A first-ever Racing for Jesus Youth Rally is set for Saturday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m., at Victory Baptist Church in Mount Airy, and organizer and Youth Director Guy Sheets said the purpose is to get people out to church who may not regularly attend.
“I was sitting in church during Christmas, and the Lord just laid putting this together on my heart,” said Sheets. “It’s something that we can do with our youth that is a little bit different.”
During the event, area race car drivers and crew members will share their personal testimonies, and food and fellowship will follow.
Sheets said interest in motorsports by his son, 16-year-old Tanner Sheets, gave him the opportunity to meet many of those involved.
“My son is a crew member for John Smith Racing at Bowman Gray,” he said. “John is a good example of a Christian man, and I sent him a text message asking whether he would be interested in coming, and he just loved the idea.”
In addition to Smith, Chris Martin, a former crew member for Adam Petty and Richard Childress Racing, will be on hand.
“(Martin) is not working on a crew at the moment, but he has a really good testimony and a great story to tell,” said Sheets.
“That’s one thing about racers,” he said. “They all have plenty of stories to tell.”
But spreading the message will be paramount.
“Our hope is to get people who wouldn’t normally come out to a church to attend and enjoy the fellowship,” Sheets said. “What I hope is that the speakers sharing their testimonies will just get up and tell their story.
“Because if you put God first, I’m not going to say everything will be perfect,” he said. “But he will open doors for you.”
All ages are welcome at the free event. In the case of snow, the rally will be held at 6 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Any area racers with a car or crew members who would like to attend can call Sheets at 786-5830.
