Local residents whose list of New Year’s resolutions includes attending more meetings of the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners will have to wait a bit to act on that vow.
That’s because the city commissioners have decided to cancel their first regular meeting for January, which affects the session that normally would have been held this Thursday.
The board is next scheduled to meet on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
It normally gathers on the first Thursday of each month, when the meetings typically begin at 2 p.m., and on the third Thursday, at 7 p.m.
The mayor, commissioners and city manager determined at the last council meeting on Dec. 19 that no pressing business was at hand to require a meeting on the Thursday after New Year’s Day.
Eliminating a meeting during holiday periods has been a practice of Mount Airy officials in recent years, affecting a total of two meetings annually. Usually, the second meeting in December is axed, but the need for several items to be acted on necessitated the Dec. 19 session.
The commissioners also have been canceling their first-Thursday meeting in July due to its proximity with the Fourth of July, a traditional vacation period.
