City streets closed for TV broadcast

Mount Airy has closed several public streets for the remainder of today to allow a Winston-Salem television station to set up and broadcast from the city.
WXII is broadcasting from the location this morning, around 5 a.m. and again around 6 p.m.
The city closed Main Street at Moore Avenue and closed Franklin Street at the entrance to the municipal parking lot on Tuesday and will keep the roads closed until 9 p.m. today.
Both Mount Airy and Surry County are supplying city and county personnel for security and safety, the city said in a written statement released Monday. Agencies involved include the Mount Airy Fire Department, Surry County EMS, Mount Airy Rescue Squad, and Surry County Sheriff’s Office.
WXII is broadcasting from the site as part of its Celebrate NC Communities Series, with Mount Airy as the first locality to be featured. In addition to the live broadcasts from Mount Airy, the city said additional stories recorded before today will also be broadcast on WXII.
“We are very excited about this event and the opportunity we have to highlight our wonderful city,” said Mount Airy Mayor Deborah Cochran. “I hope everyone has a chance to come downtown and show their community spirit on the 13th as we celebrate Mount Airy.”
