DOBSON — A benefit is being held to help a couple move from poor conditions into a donated trailer Saturday at Central Surry Volunteer Fire Department.
The Hazelwood BBQ benefit will include BBQ plates, a cornhole tournament and a motorcycle ride, and proceeds will benefit Johnny and Carolyn Hazelwood.
The trailer the couple lives in has been found to contain mold, which they are unable to treat or remove. Both of them have breathing problems and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), so friends and family are coming together to raise money to get a donated trailer moved from its existing location, set up and ready to move in for the couple.
The event will begin with the motorcycle ride, sponsored by the Wings of Glory Christian Bike Ministry, at 11 a.m. Registration will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., and cost is $20 for a single rider and $25 for double riders with a BBQ plate included. The ride will return between 2 and 2:30 p.m.
The BBQ plate dinner will begin at 1 p.m. and the cost of $7 includes BBQ, slaw, baked beans, roll, dessert and a drink. A cake auction will be held as well.
The cornhole tournament will be held rain or shine, with registration at 1:30 p.m. and the tournament starting at 2:30 p.m. Cost per team on the day of the event, between 1:30 and 2 p.m., is $35. It will be a double elimination format and operate under American Cornhole Association rules.
