PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry’s tennis team made quick work of Walkertown on Thursday, sweeping the Wolfpack 9-0 in a Northwest 1A Conference tennis match.

Tiffany King, Haley Manuel, Allie Hawks, Mikayla Manuel and Kayla Keener all earned victories in straight sets. None of the players lost a game to the Wolfpack, who have only five players.

King and Keener teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles and Kaitlyn Jones and Michela Tuppola got the victory at No. 2 doubles for the Cardinals, who capped off an impressive 3-0 week.

East (6-1 overall, 3-1 conference) defeated North Stokes 5-4 and then swept West Stokes 9-0 earlier this week.

“It was a great week,” said East coach David Kidd. “It will get a little tougher next week.”

The Cardinals play Surry Central in a nonconference match Monday followed by a conference matchup against Mount Airy. Both East Surry and Mount Airy are chasing Bishop McGuinness in the league standings.

As of Thursday, the Bears (5-1 overall, 3-1 league) and Cards were tied for second place.
