DANBURY — East Surry swept past North Stokes 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 in Northwest 1A Conference volleyball on Tuesday night.
With the victory, the Cardinals improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.
The first set was back-and-forth with neither team getting much of a lead. East took an early 7-1 lead in the second set and the Vikings never got within three points the rest of the way.
In the third set, East trailed 5-0 to start the match, but rallied with the serving of Jessi Marion to tie it up. North took a 17-15 lead, and Hayley Whitaker served to take the Cards ahead 21-17.
Coach Caleb Gilley of East said his team picked up three hard-fought wins in front of a good crowd in a hot, muggy gymnasium.
“I felt like we battled through it and picked up a good road win,” Gilley said. “North Stokes did a great job defensively. Their serving really took us out of our offense a lot. It’s something we need to get better at. I felt like my kids, they weren’t going to lose. They showed a lot of mental toughness.”
Leading the way for East was Sydney Mosley (17 digs), Cheyenne Kota (eight kills, eight digs), Hayley Whitaker (two aces), Sydney Marion (two kills, four blocks), Kristel Hicinbothem (nine kills), Olivia Sheets (34 assists, one ace, five digs), Kacie Markle (17 kills, one ace, nine blocks), and Jessi Marion (four kills, two aces).
The Cards stay on the road today when they travel to Surry Central for a nonconference match.
