Senior Hector Zuvieta scored two goals and North Surry pulled away from East Wilkes in the second half to win 5-1 in nonconference soccer action on Monday night.
With the victory, the Greyhounds improved to 3-0.
Junior Alfredo Vazquez got North on the scoreboard with a goal off a corner kick in the 23rd minute to make it 1-0. For Vazquez, it was his third goal in three games this season. The Cardinals (0-3) scored the equalizer on a break-away goal with just under a minute to go in the first half.
But the Greyhounds answered quickly, as Zuvieta found the back of the net with just one second left until intermission.
Coach Rachel Escobar, in her third season as North’s head coach, said she rested a lot of her starters on Monday. It was the Greyhounds’ second match this year against the Cardinals. North took the first meeting in Ronda 6-1.
“This group of kids has jelled well,” Escobar said. “They communicate great and they work really hard.”
Zuvieta, one of the team’s captains, added another goal in the second half. Junior David Martinez had a goal, and Issac Olea scored on a penalty kick. Ivan Barrientos started in goal for North.
The Greyhounds have seven seniors listed on this year’s roster — led by captains Zuvieta, Cristian Cortes, Alex Jones and Wyatt Easter.
Today, the Greyhounds host West Wilkes (1-2) today and travel to Elkin (0-2) on Wednesday. North beat the Blackhawks 2-0 in Millers Creek on Aug. 19. Conference play for North doesn’t start until Sept. 22 at home against West Stokes.
