Three-time defending dual team champion Mount Airy fell to Bishop McGuinness 7-2 on Wednesday in a rematch of the top two tennis teams in the Northwest 1A Conference last season.

The matchup was scheduled for Tuesday, but play was halted because of rain. Only four games had been played on most courts when play resumed Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Bailey Jackson recorded the lone singles victory for the Lady Bears (0-1). Jackson defeated senior Kendall Cortes in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Cortes was a state semifinalist last year. Coleman Craddock and Elizabeth Marion posted an impressive 8-1 win for Mount Airy at No. 3 doubles.

Bishop McGuinness won the first team point when Jai Daniels lost to Anna Petrangeli at No. 4 singles. Daniels, a senior, was down 4-3 in the first set but lost the next eight games.

Senior Carly Clark was up 3-2 in the first set of her match and 2-1 in the second set, but lost 6-4, 6-2 to Nicole Saia. Coleman Craddock, a junior, rallied from 4-1 in the first set to 5-4 before losing 7-5 to Becky Auger. Auger won the second set 6-1.

Bree Hughes, a senior, led early in both sets of her match against Morgan Auger. Hughes fell 7-5, 6-4.

Senior Carley VanHoy rallied from 3-2 in the second set to take a 5-4 lead, and earned a break at 6-5 to force a tiebreaker. Bishop secured the team victory 5-1 in singles.

In doubles, Jackson and Daniels rallied from 6-1 to 7-4, and Hughes and Vanhoy were up 4-3 and trailed 5-4 before losing 8-4.

The Bears and Villains met four times in 2013, with Mount Airy taking three of the matches. The Bears eliminated the Villains in the 1A dual-team tournament. The two teams play again on Sept. 11 at Bishop McGuinness.

Mount Airy returns to the court today at home against North Stokes.
