Nicklaus Powell Ashburn, a Mount Airy, was honored at The Honors and Awards Ceremony on May 18 at Wake Forest University. He was honored with The Walter S. Flory outstanding student award for biology and The Edgar Christman Award for for his contributions to the community through service.
Ashburn graduated summa cum laude at WFU on May 19 on Hearn Plaza with a bachelor of science degree in biology with minors in chemistry and philosophy. He will enter Wake Forest School of Medicine in August.
A member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies, he was a four-year member of the Wesley Foundation and served as president during his junior and senior years. Nick was chief of the campus Emergency Medical Response Team, and was also an aide to university president Nathan Hatch.
Attending the awards ceremony and graduation were his parents, Marty Ashburn and Kay Powell Koroll and husband, Tim Koroll of Advance; grandparents, Rick and Marie Hartman of Advance and Eleanor Powell-Hines and husband, Clarence Hines of Mount Airy. Nick is also the grandson of the late Joe “Pete” Powell of Mount Airy.
