Senior Fun Day was indeed a fun day.
The fellowship hall of Faith Baptist Church in Mount Airy was filled to capacity on Sept. 8 with seniors dancing, chatting, socializing and checking out health care information. The church parking lot was full, and buses from nursing homes and retirement villages continued to drop off residents all afternoon long so that by the time to draw for the grand prize, 307 tickets were in the pot.
The grand prize, a rocking chair donated by Brannock and Hiatt Furniture of Mount Airy, was awarded to Irene White. Earlier in the day, prizes literally rained from the sky as a T-shirt cannon fired gifts from the stage.
Bob Young, of 109-You-Pull-It commercial fame, was on hand to award door prizes and sing his signature jingle for the audience. After a raucous singalong, audience members were encouraged to come up for a contest to see who could best imitate Young’s performance. Candy Finley, Rex Arrington, Betsy White and Sandra Utt gave it a try. Arrington won the men’s competition and White won in the women’s division. Both were awarded fruit baskets from Food Lion.
When prizes were not being awarded, seniors danced the day away to the music of the Dennis Tolbert Band. A heavy contingent of line dancers kept the dance floor full most of the afternoon but when the song was right, shag dancers came out in force to claim a share of the floor. The slow songs brought out fans of that dance form, just as they do at every dance, whether it be at a middle school or a senior center.
Senior Fun Day was sponsored by YVEDDI Surry Senior Centers, Home Instead Senior Care, Mountain Valley Hospice, Mount Airy Parks and Recreation, and Food Lion.
