Alan Unsworth, Surry Community College’s Director of Academic Support and Research, received the North Carolina Community College Library Association’s (NCCCLA) Achievement Award during the NCCCLA’s annual conference held March 30-31 at Carteret Community College in Morehead City.

The Achievement Award is presented to a member of the NCCCLA who has made a significant contribution to the profession of librarianship and selection is based on one or more of the following criteria: the development of a project that significantly benefits the library profession, promotion of the profession through legislative work, and publication of material that contributes to the profession.

In addition to his dedicated work as a member of Surry’s library staff and community college system’s representative to NC LIVE, Unsworth has played many important roles within the NCCCLA. Not only did he develop and maintain the association’s website, he also served as the group’s Vice President and President-Elect in the 2013-2014 year, and led the organization as President in 2014-2015.

His colleagues expressed great admiration and appreciation for Unsworth, enforcing his recent recognition.

NCCCLA Executive Board Member Dr. Stephanie Bowers of Pitt Community College said, “He is, in my opinion, single-handedly responsible for transforming the NCCCLA website from a confusing hodgepodge that saw little use to the streamlined marvel of user-friendly functionality it is today. Gifted with a rare combination of advanced technical know-how and a generous willingness to share his expertise with his colleagues, Mr. Unsworth is that exceptional individual who is so good at what he does that it might easily be taken for granted.”

“Mr. Unsworth’s exemplary service and extra-mile efforts on behalf of the NCCCLA have been far-reaching and well beyond the normal scope of Association involvement,” Bowers added.

Dr. David Wright, Associate Dean of Learning Resources at Surry Community College, said, “Alan’s personal qualities of service and a kind attitude toward library users, as well as his colleagues, both on campus and in his professional organizational connections have earned him a high degree of respect. He can be depended on to do what he is asked, and the job is always done well.”
