PILOT MOUNTAIN — On Feb. 18, the Surry Runnin’ Patriots hosted the Community Baptist Conquerors of Reidsville at the Armfield Civic Center. This game was senior night for the Patriots, as they recognized seniors Nathaniel Goodman, P.J. Bunke, McKinley Walsh, and Nathan Hudson.

In the Patriots’ highest point total of the year, the team was paced by P.J. Bunke, who poured in a career-high 33 points. Bunke hit 7 of 10 two-point attempts and knocked down four 3-pointers in eight attempts. He also hit 7 of 9 free throws. Bunke was very effective driving to the basket after hitting three from deep in the first half, according to his coach.

The other senior that came up big for the home team was Goodman, the team’s center, who scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. These two strong individual efforts were part of a good offensive showing for the Patriots, who shot 60 percent from the field, and hit 7 of 15 3-point attempts.

But as strong as the Patriots’ offensive effort was, the hot-shooting Community Conquerors were too much for them. The visitors were led by Seth Brooks’ 41-point outburst, including 27 points in the second quarter as Community erased a 20-13 first quarter deficit.

“This is one of the better shooting teams we’ve played all year. We are not ashamed of such a strong effort against a tough opponent,” assistant coach Paul Bunke said. “Our team played together very well. That is very encouraging as we move into the final games of the year.”

The Patriots have a few more weeks in their season. On Tuesday night, the Patriots were scheduled to host Winston-Salem Christian. Then Surry was scheduled to travel to Oak Level Christian School for a weekend tournament. The season wraps up at the East Coast Championships at Liberty University in March.
