KERNERSVILLE — East Surry got off to a quick start and then turned back Bishop McGuinness late in a 63-51 Northwest Conference tournament semifinal win on Thursday night.

The Cardinals (20-5) led at the half 35-28 before Bishop cut it to 37-35 with the ball and a chance to tie the game. East rebounded a missed shot, and Scott Meredith hit three straight 3-pointers. Then he hit a pull-up jumper in traffic for 11 straight points and a 13-point lead. Tyler Smith’s 3-pointer made it 53-37 going into the fourth.

Meredith finished with a game-high 25 points. Seth Brim also hit double-figures with 13 points, seven in the first quarter.

“We got off to a good start,” East assistant coach David Johnson said. “The big guys ran the ball real well in the first quarter. Seth had a real good first quarter, and got involved early. The second half, fourth quarter especially we rebounded the ball really well. The last part of the game they were shooting a lot of 3s and we held them to one shot.”

Johnson said Cody Ashburn did a good job defensively on Spencer Wilson, who scored 40 points in a game the other night. Ashburn made Wilson work for his 21 points on Thursday night, according to Johnson.

Up next is a matchup against Winston-Salem Prep in the tournament championship game tonight at Bishop McGuinness High School. The two-time defending champions won both regular-season games against the Cardinals this season and defeated Mount Airy on Wednesday night in the tournament semifinals.

The boys game will follow the girls title game, which will feature Bishop McGuinness and Winston-Salem Prep. Tip-off for that game is 6:30 p.m.
