KING — It will be an all-Surry County tournament final tonight.
Cassidy Joyner had a huge all-around game with 18 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and five steals to lead the Surry Central Lady Eagles to a 52-33 victory over South Stokes in the Western Piedmont 2A Conference tournament semifinals on Thursday night.
With the win, Central (18-5) moves into the tournament title game against North Surry (17-6) this evening at West Stokes High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. The boys title game will follow.
In the semifinals, Central got out to an early lead thanks to its pressure defense. The Sauras were able to get back in the game as the game wore on, but Joyner scored nine points and have a few steals in the closing minutes of the first half.
“We came out with intensity on defense. Our team’s man-to-man defense is really what did the job,” Central coach Mandy Holt said. “It was definitely a team effort tonight and I’m so proud of all of them. We are excited to be in the tournament championship.”
Central led 10-7 after the first quarter but went on a 16-9 second quarter run to go up by 10 points at halftime. The Eagles took a 39-27 lead going into the fourth.
Holt also noted that Tess Dockery did an outstanding job of guarding South’s point guard. Sarah Bruce finished with 10 points. Kristen Key had six rebounds and Brooke Lewis had seven rebounds.
The Eagles and Greyhounds finished as co-conference champions during the regular season and split the two regular-season games. Holt said to be successful tonight it will be important for her team to continue playing with the same intensity it has the last few games.
“We are playing some of our best basketball right now,” Holt said. “Obviously we’ve got to be able to stop Malaya (Johnson) and try to get some rebounds. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
