KERNERSVILLE — Free throw shooting and a strong fourth quarter by Winston-Salem Prep proved to be the difference as the Mount Airy Lady Bears fell to the Phoenix 56-37 in the Northwest 1A Conference tournament semifinals on Thursday night.
It was a one-possession game until the Phoenix scored at the end of the third quarter to go ahead by five points. Prep pulled away from there, hitting 11 of 13 foul shots in the fourth to close out the win.
“I didn’t think we executed particularly well,” coach Howard Mayo of Mount Airy said. “At this stage it’s important for us to move forward. We talked about what we need to do better after the ballgame. We’ll come together for practice on Saturday and find out who we are playing next week.”
Ayano Shelton led the Bears with 11 points, two blocked shots and two steals.
Mount Airy (19-5) is the No. 3 seed out of the conference. The state playoff brackets will be released on Saturday with the first round of the playoffs on Monday night.
