WINSTON-SALEM — The East Surry Lady Cardinals were eliminated from the Northwest Conference Tournament on Tuesday, falling to Atkins 60-35.

East (9-15) kept the game close early in the first quarter before turnovers and missed shots allowed Atkins to pull away. The Camels led 18-10 after the first quarter and 36-18 at halftime. Armani Hampton led all scorers with 23 for the Camels, who will take on Bishop McGuinness in the tournament semifinals. Mount Airy will take on Winston-Salem Prep in the other girls semifinal game.

“Early in first quarter we played really well. We took care of the ball,” said East coach Keith Gunter. “For the most part we kept them off the boards early. Later we stopped making shots, they started hitting them, and we started forcing stuff. (Hampton) killed us inside. She was getting put-backs, offensive rebounds, getting open in the post. They just outplayed us in the halfcourt. They played really good halfcourt defense.”

Atkins continued to build on its lead once the third quarter got under way. The Camels went on a 19-6 run to go ahead 55-24 heading into the fourth.

Gabi Jessup paced East Surry with 12 points and Kacie Markle added 10. The Cardinals still have a chance to snag one of 20 wild card spots available for the Class 1A state playoffs, which begin Monday night. Atkins won both regular-season games against the Cardinals.
