The four local high schools are teaming up for a cancer awareness event at Mount Airy this month.

The four volleyball teams will take part in the Rivals United tournament Sept. 27 to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.

The Lady Bears recently dedicated a match to classmate Taylor Bouma who is battling Ewing sarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

Rivals United will provide proceeds to the Northwest N.C. division of the Susan G. Komen organization.

Mount Airy head coach Chuck Morris thanked East Surry, North Surry and Surry Central for joining his Bears for this Saturday event in three weeks.

Members of each team already are out in the community trying to raise funds for the event. The players are visiting businesses in Surry County asking for their help in three different ways. First, donating a service or product in the $20-$30 range to be given away as a door prize. Second, donating a service or product in the $50-and-up range to be a part of a silent auction. Third, a direct financial donation to the event.

The area division of Susan G Komen has given grants to Northern Hospital of Surry County for $45,000 a year to help fund mammograms, biopsies and other cancer procedures for folks in this community who are without health insurance or are underinsured, Morris said.

Since the Komen grants have been in place, the imaging center at Northern Hospital has provided more than 1,400 breast imaging procedures at no cost to the individuals, said Morris.

The Imaging Center staff will have a table at the gym providing information regarding these services as well as passing out literature to the students and their families. One of the main focuses this year is to reach high school and college females to educate them regarding self-awareness in regards to breast cancer.

Matches will begin at 10 a.m. with Bears taking on Surry Central, followed 30 minutes later by East Surry versus North Surry.

The mid- day match has not quite been finalizes but it looks to be a JV match between Mount Airy and North Surry. The varsity matches will resume at 3:30 p.m. with East Surry vs Surry Central followed 30 minutes later by the nightcap with Mount Airy vs North Surry.

“We will have a 50/50 drawing for each match, door prizes during each match, a Wall of Honor, T-Shirt sales and several other fundraising events for the day,” said Morris. “We invite all of the citizens to come out and support these young ladies in this very worthwhile fundraising event.”

Those willing to assist in any way may contact Coach Morris at c.h.morris9@gmail.com, and he will put people in touch with representatives.
