PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry’s powerful run game had air support on Friday night.

The defense wasn’t bad either.

Senior running back Lucas Koons rushed for two touchdowns and senior quarterback threw for two more as the Cardinals soared past Surry Central 29-3 in the season opener for both teams.

East (1-0) kept it on the ground for its first scoring drive — with eight running plays for 43 yards capped off by Koons’ 1-yard touchdown run with 2:04 left in the first quarter. After the Golden Eagles stopped East on two plays inside the 1, Koons barely got the ball across the goal line. Devon Goble’s extra point made it 7-0.

Central went three-and-out on its first possession, but the punter mishandled the snap, and East recovered at the Eagles’ 19-yard line. East needed just five plays to add to the lead. Koons scored his second TD of the game with 10:10 remaining in the second quarter on a drive that included a 14-yard run from Demidrick Hargrave.

East’s Blake Marion drew a pass interference call on the Cardinals’ next drive, which was nine plays and covered 50 yards. Smith connected with Jack Edwards on a 13-yard touchdown that made it 20-0.

The Eagles had a solid game from tailback Alex Martin, who broke several big runs on Central’s only scoring drive of the game. Kirk Needham also hit Noah Wilmoth on a 21-yard pass play. That drive ended when Uriel Secundino’s field goal attempt split the uprights as the second quarter ran out.

Gage Edwards caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Smith in the third quarter, and Andrew Kozlow hit a 26-yard field goal to complete the scoring.

East suffered a huge blow when it lost lineman Corben Kiser to a broken leg in the second quarter. He was taken to Baptist Hospital.

The Eagles’ home opener is next week against East Wilkes. The Cardinals hit the road for Starmount in Week 2.

Notes: East Surry has won the annual matchup the last three years, including a 20-0 shutout win in 2013 … Surry Central’s last win in the series was in 2011 by a 27-23 final score.
